The
latest restoration project developed for the Santo Amaro da Barra
Grande Fortress was proposed and carried out by Lúcio
Costa at the end of the 20th century (covering from 1994 to 2000).
The restoration consisted of a delicate modern metallic structure
that only supported the extremities of the ruins of the central
pavilion, spanning a 40 meter open area. Architect Victor Hugo Mori,
of IPHAN, Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico
Nacional (the National Institute of Artistic and Historic Legacy),
describes it as: "A Spanish design made of CAC steel that obeys
the requirements of the Venice Charter (1964), which establishes:
"any complementary work recognized as indispensable due to
technical or aesthetical reasons must stand out from the architectonic
structure and should display the mark of our era."
