Santo Amaro da Barra Grande Fortress was active until 1905, after which it lost its strategic position to Fort Itaipu, situated on the southern counterfort of Santos Bay. It came back into activity in the middle of the century when it became the headquarters of the Santos Military Circle. In this, Santo Amaro da Barra Grande Fortress was named a national monument in 1967 and handed over to the formally called Pro-Memorial/SPHAN*. Today, it belongs to IPHAN - Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (the National Institute of Artistic and Historic Legacy), an administrative organization for the Ministry of Culture. After a local society movement led by NECOM - Núcleo de Extensão Comunitário da UniSantos (the Communitarian Extension Nucleus of UniSantos), in September 2nd ,1993, the old fortress received its latest restoration after the establishment of an Agreement of Intentions between Guarujá city Hall, IPHAN and the Catholic University of Santos.
