Santo Amaro da Barra Grande Fortress is the most expressive military architectural building in the State of São Paulo and the foremost colonial fortification complex built throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in order to protect Santos Bay. The defensive system was organized by double fortification lines: São João and São Felipe Fortresses, on Bertioga Canal; Vera Cruz de Ipanema and the Village or Our Lady of Mount Serrat Fortresses, near the harbor; and Santo Amaro da Barra Grande Fortress, with its fortification backups: Estacada Fort and Goes Beach Blockhouse, to protect the entrance to the bay.
